Terms of Appointment
The Chair is appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment. A draft of the full terms and conditions is available on request, but the key points are summarised below.
Period of appointment
The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of one re-appointment, subject to satisfactory performance and attendance.
The appointee may resign at any time by notice in writing to the Ministers. The Ministers may terminate the appointment under certain conditions, which will be notified to the successful candidate on appointment.
Remuneration
The fee for the Chair is £40,459.77 per annum for a time commitment of 8 days per month (£110,000 pro rata)
Reasonable travel and other expenses will be reimbursed.
Conduct
The Chair must observe the highest standards of impartiality, integrity and objectivity in relation to stewardship of public funds and management of the MMO. Appointees will be accountable to the Secretary of State for the Environment and should not use information gained in the course of this appointment for personal gain or to promote other interests. Any appointment can be terminated early by the Secretary of State if the appointee fails to perform his or her duties to a satisfactory standard.
You must declare any personal or business interests which may, or may be perceived to, influence your judgements in performing your functions. Should a particular matter give rise to a conflict of interest, you would be required to inform the Board in advance and withdraw from discussions or consideration of the matter.
You are not expected to occupy paid party political posts or hold particularly sensitive or high roles in a political party. Subject to the foregoing, you are free to engage in political activities provided that you are conscious of your general public responsibilities and exercise a proper discretion, particularly with regard to the work of the MMO. Your appointment may be terminated if you accept a prominent position in any political party if the Secretary of State feels the positions are incompatible.

The MMO Board will meet at least 4 times per year. These meetings will either be at the HQ in Newcastle, in London or at one of the MMO regional offices around the coast.
